This supports organisations to manage safety risks of plant in the workplace in-line with the Code of Practice under section 274 of the Work Health and Safety Act (the WHS Act). We provide practical guidance on how to manage safety risks associated with operating plant in the workplace. It includes information about specific control measures required under the WHS Regulations for plant generally.
Plant is a major cause of workplace death and injury and there are significant risks associated with using plant/equipment, including:

  • being crushed by plant during operations
  • limbs amputated by unguarded moving parts
  • slips, trips and falls while accessing, operating or maintaining plant
  • electric shock from plant that is not properly protected or isolated
  • burns or scalds due to contact with hot surfaces
  • hearing loss due to noisy plant/equipment
  • operating plant that is poorly installed or designed
  • exposure to extreme hot/cold fluids
