The Safe Work Method Statement is a document that clearly records the specific methodology and principles to manage safe work. It includes the required resources identified as essential to accomplish each task associated with the nature of work to be carried out. It prescribes the risk control measures to ensure safe work is carried out within acceptable boundaries. It also list the proper use and maintenance of any PPE required for the work. A good SWMS would include the following;
- Safe work procedure (includes work sequence and the range of methods by which the work can be done and verification check-points)
- Use of essential equipment for the work activity(eg. general tools or special equipment,physical guards)
- Safe use, handling, storage and transport of plant and substances
- Provision of critical safety information, instruction or training
- Maintenance of places of work in a safe condition (scheduled inspections)
- Provision and maintenance of safe entrances and exits from place of work
- Availability of information about hazardous substances used for the work activity
- Ensuring the health and safety of visitors and members of the public
- Reporting all injuries, accidents or safety incidents (including near misses)
- Emergency response and rescue procedures (required for high risk work activities)
A SWMS must be prepared for work activities that have a medium or high risk rating and must be developed in consultation with staff that performs the work. When developing a SWMS it is important to observe the work activity, discussing it with those involved in the activity, drawing on the local knowledge of the team, identify existing work instructions and industry wide safe work practices.
